A Working Palace
This high resolution touchscreen interactive interpreting the history of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton is the flagship of Desktop Display's multimedia installations.
Produced under a EU initiative to support tourism strategies through the creation of multimedia products, it tells the story of the palace's history in a highly visual way, featuring material drawn from the Pavilion's extensive archive.
With such a wealth of information about the Royal Pavilion, the challenge for Desktop Display was to structure and present it. A creative template evolved out of extensive consultation with users and brainstorming sessions with Museum staff. This was inspired by one of the Pavilion's oriental windows and provided pictorial links to associated content.
Before deciding on this design, we built and tested countless prototypes. This process taught us a lot about what visitors to the Pavilion asked, which in turn guided the development of the content. For instance, we shot video of unseen areas of the Pavilion to answer frequently asked questions about secret tunnels and hidden rooms. We also added an interactive map of the grounds and rooms to help visitors to understand the layout and workings of the palace.
